The farm has been in the Wookey family since 1928, and the current barn was constructed on the site of an older thatched barn that dated back to the time of Rachel and Joe’s great-grandfather. The previous structure was replaced with a steel-frame and concrete shed in 1962, costing a total of 2,137 pounds, 13 shillings and ten pence. Additional funding of £712 was provided by the ministry of agriculture. The shed, known as Sergeant’s Barn, was primarily used to house cattle and other livestock. Improvements to the shed included the addition of homemade timber troughs in 1966 and a concrete roadway in 1967.
In 1970, Joe’s grand-father Barry decided to convert the farm into an organic farm, which was a relatively new concept and involved a major change in our farming practices to stop using chemicals in our fields. During this time, Sergeant’s Barn played a crucial role as an asset. Although it was primarily utilised for storing farm machinery, it was occasionally used by the Wookey children for horse riding during heavy rainfall.
Chalk Barn was further updated in 2019, transforming the barn into a contemporary wedding venue that is in keeping with our sustainable ethos and love of nature.
